Grain Mills

Control Your Crush

A personal grain mill gives you control over crush consistency, ensures freshness (crush immediately before brewing), and saves money by purchasing grain in bulk. It is one of the best investments an all-grain brewer can make.

Two-Roller vs Three-Roller

Two-roller mills (Cereal Killer, Barley Crusher) are the homebrewing standard. Grain passes through a single gap between two knurled rollers. Affordable ($100-150), effective, and easy to adjust.

Three-roller mills (Monster Mill MM3) add a third roller for a two-stage crush. Grain passes through a wider gap first (cracking open the husks), then through a finer gap (crushing the endosperm). This produces a more consistent crush with better husk integrity. More expensive ($200-300) but worth it for brewers who prioritize efficiency and lautering performance.

Gap Setting

The gap between rollers determines crush fineness:

  • Too wide (> 0.050"): Intact kernels pass through unconverted. Low efficiency, sweet spent grain.
  • Optimal (0.035-0.045"): Husks cracked open with exposed endosperm. Good efficiency, clean lautering.
  • Too fine (< 0.030"): Flour-like crush that clogs the grain bed, causing stuck sparges. High efficiency but operational problems.

Use a feeler gauge to set the gap precisely. Start at 0.040" and adjust based on efficiency and lautering performance.

Manual vs Motorized

Manual — a hand crank attached to the mill. Works fine for 5-gallon batches (10-15 lbs of grain) but becomes tedious for larger batches.

Motorized — attach a drill or dedicated motor to the mill shaft. Crushes grain in minutes instead of 15-20 minutes of hand cranking. A $30 corded drill makes an excellent mill motor.

Conditioning (Optional)

Some brewers lightly mist grain with water (spray bottle, 1-2% moisture by weight) 30-60 minutes before crushing. This conditioning toughens the husks, reducing shredding and improving lauter performance. Particularly useful with thin-husked varieties.

Bulk Grain Buying

A mill enables buying grain in 55 lb sacks — significantly cheaper per pound than buying pre-crushed by the recipe. Store uncrushed grain in sealed containers for 6-12 months. Crush fresh on brew day.

Maintenance

Keep rollers clean and dry. Blow out residual grain dust after each use. Oil the bearings periodically (food-grade mineral oil). Check gap alignment annually.
