Phenol

A class of aromatic compounds that produce spicy, smoky, or medicinal flavors in beer. Desirable phenols include the clove-like 4-vinylguaiacol in wheat beers and the smoky character in rauchbier. Undesirable phenols can taste like Band-Aids or plastic, often caused by wild yeast or chlorinated water.
