Pumps and Plumbing

Moving Liquid

As your brewing setup grows, gravity alone may not be sufficient to move hot wort and cleaning solutions where they need to go. A good pump simplifies transfers, enables recirculation, and powers counterflow and plate chillers.

Magnetic Drive Pumps

The standard for homebrewing. A magnetically coupled impeller moves liquid without a shaft seal, eliminating leak points. The pump head never contacts the motor, making them safe for hot liquids.

Recommended models: Chugger, Blichmann RipTide, SS Brewtech.

Specs to consider: Flow rate (5-7 GPM for homebrew scale), head pressure (sufficient to lift wort to kettle height), and material (food-grade stainless or polysulfone pump heads).

March Pumps

The classic homebrew pump. Reliable, affordable, and widely available. March 809 and 815 series have been used by homebrewers for decades.

Peristaltic Pumps

Liquid only contacts the tubing inside the pump, making cleaning trivial — just replace the tubing. Slower flow rate than magnetic drive pumps. Excellent for precise, slow transfers (metering yeast nutrients, adding acid).

Quick Disconnects

Quick disconnect (QD) fittings enable tool-free connection and disconnection of hoses. Camlocks and stainless QDs are the most popular. They simplify brew day setup and teardown enormously.

Silicone Tubing

High-temperature silicone tubing (rated to 500 F) is the standard for hot-side connections. It is flexible, easy to clean, and does not impart flavors. Replace it periodically as it eventually becomes cloudy and stiff.

Plumbing Layout

A typical all-grain system has three vessels (hot liquor tank, mash tun, kettle) connected by silicone hoses with quick disconnects. A single pump can be moved between connections as needed, or multiple pumps can provide simultaneous recirculation.

Safety

Never run a pump dry — it damages the impeller seal. Always prime the pump before starting. Use hose clamps on all connections to prevent hot wort from spraying. Keep electrical connections away from water.
