Description
A dark, strong, malty German lager with rich, bready malt flavors and restrained hop character. Smooth and well-lagered.
Aroma
Moderate to strong malty aroma with rich bread, toast, and dark caramel notes. Possible faint chocolate. Low hop aroma. Very clean lager fermentation. Rich, warming, and inviting.
Appearance
Deep amber to dark brown, 14-22 SRM. Clear. Large off-white to tan head with persistent retention.
Flavor
Rich, smooth malt flavor with bread, toast, dark caramel, and subtle chocolate. Very low hop bitterness. Semi-dry to slightly sweet finish. No harsh roast notes.
Mouthfeel
Medium to medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, rich, and well-lagered. Slight warming from alcohol.
History
The original Bock style, traditionally associated with the north German city of Einbeck (which gave the name 'Bock') in the 13th-14th centuries, later adopted by Munich brewers. The dark, strong lager tradition was popularized by Paulaner and Salvator brands in Bavaria. Traditionally associated with Catholic fasting periods (Lent).
