Build Your Own

Some of the best brewing equipment is built, not bought. DIY projects save money, customize your setup, and provide the satisfaction of brewing with gear you made yourself.

Cooler Mash Tun

A 10-gallon rectangular cooler converted into a mash tun is the homebrewing classic.

Materials: 10-gallon Rubbermaid or Igloo cooler ($25-35), stainless steel braid (from a supply hose) or a false bottom ($10-20), a ball valve ($10-15), and fittings ($5-10). Total: $50-80.

Build: Remove the cooler's existing drain plug. Install a bulkhead fitting and ball valve. Attach a stainless steel braid or false bottom inside for grain filtration. The cooler's insulation maintains mash temperature within 1-2 F over 60 minutes.

DIY Stir Plate

A stir plate keeps yeast starters in suspension for optimal growth.

Materials: Small computer fan ($5), rare-earth magnets ($3), a project box or cigar box ($5), a stir bar ($5), and a power supply ($5). Total: $20-25.

Build: Glue magnets to the fan hub. Mount the fan inside the box with the magnets facing up. Place the flask on top — the spinning magnets drive the stir bar. A potentiometer controls fan speed.

Fermentation Chamber

A chest freezer plus an Inkbird ITC-308 temperature controller. Detailed in the Temperature Controllers guide. Total cost: $100-150 with a used freezer.

Keezer

A chest freezer converted to serve draft beer.

Materials: Chest freezer ($50-100 used), lumber for a collar ($15-20), taps and shanks ($30-50 per tap), hose and fittings ($15-20).

Build: Build a wooden collar that sits between the freezer body and lid, providing space for tap shanks without drilling into the freezer walls. Install taps, connect kegs inside, and add a temperature controller for serving temperature.

Immersion Wort Chiller

Materials: 50 feet of 3/8" copper tubing ($30-50), garden hose fittings ($5-10), compression fittings ($5).

Build: Coil the tubing around a large pot or bucket to shape it. Attach garden hose fittings to each end. Submerge in the boil for the last 15 minutes to sanitize, then run cold water through to chill.

Hop Spider

A mesh basket that hangs inside the kettle to contain hop debris during the boil.

Materials: Stainless steel mesh strainer ($10), a stainless hook or clamp ($5).

Build: Bend a hook to hang the strainer from the kettle rim. Add hops to the strainer during the boil. Remove after the boil for clean wort transfer.

The DIY Spirit

Building your own equipment is part of the homebrewing tradition. Start with simple projects and work up to more complex builds. Every piece of gear you make yourself deepens your connection to the craft.
