Descripción

A malt-focused, generally caramelly beer with a wider range of caramel flavors than darker Scottish ales. May have more esters and hop character.

Aroma

Moderate to moderately-strong caramel and toasty malt aroma. Low hop aroma. Low to moderate fruity esters. Light butterscotch possible. Richer and more complex than lighter Scottish ales.

Apariencia

Amber to dark brown, 10-30 SRM. Clear. Tan to off-white head with moderate retention.

Sabor

Moderate to moderately strong caramel malt flavor with toffee and toasty notes. Low hop bitterness. Low to moderate fruity esters. Slight butterscotch. Moderately dry finish.

Medium body with low to moderate carbonation. Smooth. Slight warming. Easy-drinking for its strength.

Historia

The standard-strength Scottish ale (80/-) in the traditional shilling designation system. The most commonly served Scottish ale in Scottish pubs, equivalent in strength to English Best Bitter but with a distinctly more malt-focused Scottish character. Belhaven Best is a well-known example.
