It balances roasted yet smooth malt against moderate hop bitterness, the dark malt reading as clean roast rather than heaviness, at 4.4 to 5.4 percent alcohol with 20 to 30 IBU and a very dark 19 to 30 SRM colour. Köstritzer Schwarzbier, brewed in Bad Köstritz since at least 1543, is the defining example. Kulmbacher Mönchshof Schwarzbier and Samuel Adams Black Lager also represent the style.
