Description
A dark German lager that balances roasted yet smooth malt flavors with moderate hop bitterness. Surprisingly light and crisp for its dark color.
Arôme
Low to moderate roasted malt aroma with coffee or dark chocolate notes, without harsh burnt character. Low to moderate herbal or floral hop aroma. Clean lager fermentation. Restrained and elegant.
Aspect
Very dark brown to black, 17-30 SRM. Clear with dark ruby highlights. Tan to off-white head with moderate to good retention.
Saveur
Moderate roasted malt flavor with coffee and dark chocolate, without harsh burnt character. Moderate German hop bitterness. Dry, clean finish. Light in body despite dark color.
Texture en bouche
Medium-light body with moderate to high carbonation. Smooth and crisp despite dark color. No astringency.
Histoire
A specialty of Thuringia in eastern Germany, Köstritz being the historical center of production. Despite the very dark color, the style is known for being surprisingly light and crisp. Köstritzer Schwarzbier is the defining example and has been brewed in Bad Köstritz since at least 1543.
