अवलोकन
Bass Brewery first applied the term barleywine around 1903 to its Bass No. 1, drawing on the old tradition of strong October and stock ales. This is a showcase of malty richness, chewy and full in body, with bread crust, dark fruit, toffee, and caramel. It is among the strongest of English ales at 8.0 to 12.0 percent alcohol, with wide-ranging 35 to 70 IBU and an 8 to 22 SRM colour. Thomas Hardy's Ale, brewed from 1968 to be cellared, is a landmark, and American craft brewers revived and popularised the style alongside their own barleywine. J.W. Lees Harvest Ale and Fuller's Golden Pride are further examples. BJCP lists it as 17D.
