Reinheitsgebot

The German Beer Purity Law of 1516, originally decreed in Bavaria, stipulating that beer could only be brewed from water, barley, and hops (yeast was unknown at the time). While no longer legally binding in its original form, the Reinheitsgebot remains a powerful marketing symbol and cultural touchstone for German brewing tradition.
