Cleaning and Sanitizing Equipment

The Foundation of Quality

Cleaning and sanitizing equipment is not glamorous, but it is the foundation of every good beer. Invest in the right tools and chemicals, and cleaning becomes fast and effective.

Cleaning Chemicals

PBW (Powdered Brewery Wash) — an alkaline, oxygen-based cleaner that dissolves organic deposits (krausen rings, hop residue, protein) without scrubbing. Soak for 20-30 minutes in warm water. Rinse thoroughly. The professional standard.

OxiClean Free — a cheaper alternative to PBW with similar performance. Use the fragrance-free and dye-free version only. One tablespoon per gallon of warm water.

Sanitizers

Star San — a phosphoric acid and surfactant blend. Mix 1 oz per 5 gallons of water. Contact time: 30 seconds. No-rinse — the foam is safe. Effective, fast, and idiot-proof. Store mixed solution in a sealed container for weeks.

Iodophor — an iodine-based sanitizer. Mix to 12.5 ppm. Contact time: 2 minutes. No-rinse at proper dilution. Stains plastic amber (cosmetic only).

Brushes

Carboy brush — a long, bent brush for cleaning narrow-necked carboys and large bottles. Essential if you use glass carboys.

Bottle brush — smaller version for 12 oz and 22 oz bottles. A bottle washer (Avvinatore-style) mounted on a faucet speeds up the process dramatically.

Keg post brush — tiny brushes sized for Corny keg posts and dip tubes. Critical for keg sanitation.

Spray Bottles

Keep a spray bottle of mixed Star San solution at the ready during brew day. Spritz any surface that contacts beer — spoons, hydrometers, airlocks, scissors, your hands. Quick, convenient, and effective.

Soaking Vessels

A 7-gallon bucket dedicated to soaking equipment in PBW solution is invaluable. Drop in keg parts, valves, fittings, and tubing and let them soak while you do other cleanup.

Bottle Cleaning Station

If you bottle, invest in a jet-style bottle washer (the Vinator or similar). It attaches to a faucet and shoots pressurized water into inverted bottles. Followed by a bottle tree for draining and drying, this setup makes bottling day much less painful.

Replacement Schedule

  • Silicone and vinyl tubing: every 6-12 months (or when cloudy/stained)
  • Plastic fermenters: every 2-3 years (or when scratched)
  • Bottle brush: when bristles fray
  • Star San solution: when pH rises above 3.5
