A strong, rich, and very malty German lager. Darker versions have more richly-developed, deeper malt flavors, while lighter versions have a slightly more hop and dryness.

Strong malty aroma with rich bread, toffee, dark caramel, and dried fruit notes. Faint chocolate possible in darker versions. Very low hop aroma. Clean lager fermentation. Complex and warming.

Dark gold to dark brown, 6-25 SRM. Clear. Large off-white to tan head with persistent retention.

Very rich malt flavor with deep caramel, toffee, bread, dark fruit, and possible chocolate. Very low hop bitterness. Semi-sweet finish with alcohol warmth. Complex and deeply satisfying.

Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Rich and smooth with alcohol warmth. Well-lagered. No harsh texture.

역사

A Bavarian monastic brewing tradition, perfected by the Paulaner monks at the Neudeck ob der Au monastery in Munich in the 17th century. The monks brewed this strong lager (Salvator) to sustain them during Lenten fasting. Salvator by Paulaner remains the defining example. Name historically suffixed with '-ator' by many breweries.
