Irish Stout
Description
A black beer with a pronounced roasted flavor, often similar to coffee. The balance can range from fairly even to quite bitter, with versions featuring a thicker mouthfeel.
Aroma
Moderate to strong roasted grain and coffee aroma, sometimes with chocolate notes. Low hop aroma. Clean fermentation with no fruity esters. Slightly acidic roast quality. Dry and inviting.
Appearance
Jet black, opaque, 25-40 SRM. Clear but dark. Thick, creamy tan head with excellent retention — iconic cascading pour.
Flavor
Moderate to strong roasted grain and coffee flavor. Low to moderate malt. Firm to high bitterness. Dry, bitter, roasty finish. No sweetness. Classic dry Irish stout character.
Mouthfeel
Medium-light to medium body with moderate carbonation (nitrogen typically produces creamier feel). Smooth, creamy texture from nitro. No astringency.
History
Arthur Guinness leased the St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin in 1759 and by the early 19th century was focused on Porter production. The dry, roasted style became synonymous with Irish brewing identity. Guinness Stout became one of the world's most recognized beer brands. The nitro-pour innovation (1959) created the iconic cascading pint.
