Dunkles Weissbier

Darker than the pale Weissbier yet older than it, this Bavarian wheat beer represents the Weizen tradition as it stood before pale wheat malt was perfected in the nineteenth century. It retains the banana and clove yeast character of its lighter sibling while setting it against toasty bread and caramel malt, which deepens the colour to 14 to 23 SRM. Strength stays modest at 4.3 to 5.6 percent alcohol with 10 to 18 IBU, so the extra malt reads as complexity rather than weight. A more layered if less fashionable member of the family, it is bottled by Franziskaner Dunkel, Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel, and Erdinger Dunkel.
